You happily thought you’d outgrown acne for ever the moment you left your teens. Then out of the blue, you’re 25, 35, 45 even 55 and it’s back! You’re stunned! How? Why?
Here’s what you need to know.
Adult acne can affect up to 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives. And an unexpected upsurge of adult-onset acne can come as a blow just as much as it did when you were a teen, causing upset, irritation and even depression.
Current clinical researchers in dermatology are also reporting seeing a rise in cases adult acne in women.
So what’s going on here?
HOW IS ADULT ACNE DIFFERENT FROM TEEN ACNE?
The pattern of adult acne is different in adults than in teens and it’s all to do with the location of the acne. In teens, typically acne appears on the forehead and cheeks while in adults it tends to be on the lower face, along the jawline and neck.
Teens see a mix of cystic bumps, blackheads, whiteheads throughout their face whereas adult acne tends to arrive in the form of big angry red bumps.
WHY DO WE GET ACNE?
We’ve identified 4 key reasons:
Similarly to teen acne, factors such as pores that get clogged by oil, skin cells and bacteria create the right conditions for an acne flare-up.
This is a biggie! Especially the hormonal fluctuations caused by the menstrual cycle. As your period draws closer, your oestrogen levels drop, leaving your testosterone levels unchecked. Testosterone can increase your skin’s oil production, so that leads to a higher chance of clogged pores and big red pimples just around the time you get your period!
The presence of oestrogen in your body tends to limit sebum production, so when you approach menopause and your oestrogen supplies start dwindling, sebum production increases. And then guess what? Oily skin and all the breakouts that go with that!
If you’re taking birth-control pills, it’s worth discussing with your health care practitioner whether these might be contributing to your acne and what alternatives there might be.
Stress causes your adrenal glands to release cortisol, another hormone which if it remains elevated over long periods, can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain, insomnia and because it encourages oiliness and inflammation… yes, skin break outs.
We all know the lifestyle changes we need to make to reduce our stress levels – much more sleep, more water, a nourishing diet and perhaps a daily meditation practice to stay centred or spending daily time in nature, away from our devices.
Dermatologists often recommend reducing high glycemic processed foods such as pasta, bread and rice, as well as foods that carry a heavy hormone load such as dairy products. Milk naturally contains a great number of homones so it’s worth cutting out of your diet to see if that helps.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO TO FIX IT?
Most common acne medications (such as Accutane and Benzoyl peroxide) can have severe side effects (birth defects and harshly drying out your skin) and aren’t designed to meet the specific skincare needs of adult women, especially as your skin becomes less resilient with age.
Women of colour are particularly prone to developing dark spots from acne treatments (known as Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation or PIH) The majority of these chemical solutions have been found to only clear the skin to a limited degree.
